BABYCAKES will be bringing in 2012 with a crazy special for all of our SugarWhores...

For every dozen cupcakes that you order in the month of January - you'll get a half dozen FREE.
I'll be posting more here, on the website, Facebook, Twitter, etc. about this as we head towards New Years, so keep your eyes peeled.

Happy Holidays!

Happy National Cupcake Day!

and, I'll say it again...
Happy National Cupcake Day!

I know, I know... it was yesterday - but, I feel like it's still Friday, so we'll go with it.

In honor of said holiday (we should all take the day off from now on) we're going in inundate you with pictures from the last few weeks.
It's been crazy busy around here, hence the lack of postings (and sleep) so - here are a few of the fruits of BABYCAKES labor, so to speak...

Peppermint Hot Chocolate

these were for a holiday event that House Boutique in La Plata hosted.

also for House Boutique, in La Plata

last one from House Boutique

if you haven't seen our "present boxes" yet - here they are.. individually boxed cupcakes, the boxes and ribbon are, of course, custom to your event and filled with some love for our SugarWhores.. perfect as a favor for a bridal shower, wedding, etc.

white chocolate butterflies and froggies for a lucky little princess's first birthday

because every princess needs a crown -- these topped perfectly pink cupcakes and cake pops

just some of the 1,500+ cake pops that were delivered over the last few weeks...

bling, bling

the only thing better than sparkle, is sparkle that you can eat :)

So -- there you have it, just a few of the things that have kept me so busy! I hope that everyone is enjoying the holidays and their BABYCAKES! I'm looking forward to the New Year and what it will bring for this little business, my family and of course my SugarWhores.

Happy Halloween.. wait, it's Christmas?

I woke up this morning, looked at the calendar and proceeded to freak the hell out. It's November? Does this always happen the day after Halloween? Apparently so. Do I always have a melt-down when I realize that it's time for the sugary onslaught of Thanksgiving, Christmas and the other 400 celebrations that take place over the next few months. Now that I own my own pastry business, you're damn right I do...
This last month has been a crazy one and here we are now in full holiday swing! But, I love it. It's really my favorite time of year. I swear. Bring on the holiday cheer. My favorite accessory other than buttercream is after all sparkle.

I hope that you all had a boo-tiful Halloween and that your candy isn't gone already! If it is, just steal some from your kids. They won't notice and think of it as protecting them from another cavity.

An army of spiders were eaten here at buttercream central and they were delish!

And, we turned out a few hundred spooky cake pops which were equally tasty!

Now. Moving on to the holiday's ahead.. You can check out the Holiday flavors here. Our Holiday box will be available in cupcakes OR cake pops. The sooner that your orders come in for Thanksgiving, the better... we'll be accepting orders between now and the 18th of Nov. (for Thanksgiving that is) and we'll be delivering through the Wednesday before (Nov. 23rd).
We'll be accepting Christmas orders until Dec. 20th and we'll be delivering through the 23rd of Dec.
As usual - any questions or orders can be placed via. the website or directly to my e-mail, babycakesSKJ@gmail.com

we're not dead! just busy! here's our hodge podge catch up!

I know, it's been weeks... however, it's been weeks of cake pops, cupcakes, wedding cakes, cookies, tarts and more for BABYCAKES! We've been up to our ears in buttercream.

The Civista Wine Tasting was a huge success! They raised over $100,000 for our local hospital and I'm pretty sure that BABYCAKES were a huge hit. We're received several orders from those that sampled our confections, set up a few wedding tastings and of course - the yum!'s and mmmmm!'s were a pretty good indicator. Did I mention it was a really good time, also? If you didn't attend this year.. make it a must for next year's to do list. Between the food, the wine, the music and the silent auction - you're guaranteed to enjoy yourself.

This was my view for the evening...

And, yes - it was difficult NOT to eat our samples.

Our booth was pretty cute, if I do say so myself..

I refilled that tower several times, and we were still empty by 7:30! Almost 1,000 confections disappeared!

We've got lots going on over the next months - including a tea/spa party for little girls and their mama's at the gorgeous Victorian Candle Bed and Breakfast in Hollywood, MD! There will be cupcakes, mani/pedi's and lots of awesome girlie vendors - more about that as soon as I get the details. I do know that it's November 5th from 12-4, so mark your calendars.. I'll post a link to tickets ASAP!

We're also in the works of sponsoring a Bone Marrow Registration drive. It's come to our attention recently just how many people NEED bone marrow transplants... did you know that even if you sign up to be apart of the registry - your chances for being a match are only 1 in 546? It's quite difficult to find a match for everyone - and it could be that person's only chance of survival. If you're willing to join the Bone Marrow Registry, please do.. I will post more info about the drive when I get it. So far, it looks like it will be a good time on top of you doing a really good thing... think, cocktails and cupcakes!

And, finally - Holiday flavors will be announced this week! Sooooo - keep your eyes peeled. We'll be running specials for pre-orders via Facebook and who knows what else we'll throw out there.

It's always a great time and I'm beyond excited for our table and display!

See you there, Sugga Lova's!

The overwhelming support for BABYCAKES deal with Certifikid has been incredible. Thrilled doesn't even begin to describe how excited I am to spread the sugar around and meet some new faces. We've delivered a few already and it has been so great to meet new clients and form exciting new partnerships and relationships with some of them already. a day in the life of a Mompreneur..

Mom + Small Business Owner + Wife = one thing and one thing only, not enough time in the day...

Yup - that's us. I swore I'd never put a picture up of the kids/hubs, but how can I resist when they are this fabulous? Besides, this photograph is almost 4 years old. The kids are much bigger and louder now.

Back to that whole not enough time in a day thing... I am constantly wracked with guilt about what isn't getting done. I'm either NOT doing laundry, NOT spending time with my husband, NOT playing baseball with the kids or NOT working on this little bitty business that I call my own. And, to be perfectly honest - they all NEED me. Of course, there are priorities.. and sometimes, we don't have enough clean socks to go around... but, there is always enough love and so what if we are having breakfast for dinner, again - you guys love fruit loops and frozen waffles.

I just thought you'd enjoy a day in the life of... I mean, why not? You read all my other crazy shit. For starters, it's almost 1am on a Friday night - the house is quiet. Perfect Mommy drinking wine and watching a movie time.. I'm blogging. Oh wait, I just blogged about wine and a movie, does that count?

So, my alarm is usually set for any time from 3am - 7am depending on what the day ahead holds. If I'm baking, the earlier the better. I get finished before breakfast and can actually shower and funnel a cup of coffee before delivering and throwing some breakfast at the squirrel monkeys. Generally, before breakfast someone has had a mach 4 meltdown over socks, cereal, or perhaps the fact that Mommy has finally put her foot down and "NO, we aren't watching Sponge Bob again..". We skate over the first meltdown and pack up to make deliveries, hoping once we are all buckled in the car that mine and the kids teeth have been brushed, hair isn't a tangled mess, and that there are no "boob stains" on my shirt... hell, let's just hope I brushed my teeth. During the school year, my first stop is kiss and ride at the Elementary school - which we all know has stresses of it's own. "kiss, kiss, loveyouhaveagooddayseeyouthisafternoonbegood! all in 5.3 seconds - 'cause you cannot slow down the flow of the Elementary school drop off line. It's punishable by being shunned at the next PTA meeting. I'm not kidding, don't laugh. I get nervous and start to sweat - every. single. time.

Depending on where deliveries are, we can be in the car for a good long while. If the kiddos are tagging along we usually come prepared - snacks, hand held video games, but... let's be honest - at some point the kids are fist fighting and launching themselves from the back seat over the captains chairs and I'm desperately begging them to stay away from the cupcakes, and stop biting each other! It happens. Hopefully no one draws blood, 'cause Lord knows we don't have time to stop for first-aid.

By the time we get home, if we make it in one piece... everyone is a little worse for wear and probably hungry.. look! Cheerios for dinner! And chocolate milk!

If I'm really lucky, at some point in the evening I'll find my daughter holed up in the bathroom attempting to wax her arms and legs with Mommy's eyebrow waxing kit. True Story.

But, the best part of the day, is when things finally quiet down, there is no more tornado affect rolling through the house and we get to tuck those little monkeys into bed. There is nothing sweeter or more peaceful than a sleeping child. No, really... nothing.

Long story short, all you mompreneurs out there...  take pride in the simple fact that no matter what, we do our best as parents and work our tired hineys off as providers and moms and wives and sisters, friends, etc. for our families.
I may carry guilt with me forever, but what kind of mom would I be if I didn't?

all because two people fell in love..

these adorable little guys were wedding favors for a bridal shower.. and have inspired me to do so much more w/ cake pops - I can't wait...

Happy Birthday America!

the fourth of July looked a little something like this for us here at BABYCAKES...

Please don't lick your screen, that's gross.

nothing says summer like berries..

we hope that you all had a spectacular holiday weekend..
and BABYCAKES would like to say a special *thank you* to those that have and do serve this great country!

blog fix.

It's been brought to my attention by someone {that obviously has great taste} -- that I haven't updated in awhile and that they need a blog fix, mind you, they also mentioned just how funny I am.. so they may or may not be on drugs -- either way.. Hello kids, it's catch up time..

So, chit chat... let's see.. we have an awesome deal coming up this month with Certifikid. It will be sometime during July -- I'm not sure of the exact date but I am positive that we will talk all about it {a lot} the days leading up to, so pay attention.. but really, we won't let you miss out. Promise.

Sad news. The other day the blue sugar mobile (my wheels) tried to kill me. Or, perhaps I suddenly became compelled to drive off the road recklessly just 'cause -- rumor has it, I'm a much better baker than I ever have been driver. But, seriously - there is the slight chance that Georgetown Cupcake heard that I was heading on to their turf (one of my deliveries that day was in G-Town) and messed w/ my car mafia style.
I hope that everyone knows that last sentence is dripping w/ sarcasm. I may not be a fan of their cupcakes, or their lame-o attitudes, but I'm pretty sure they aren't trying to take me out.
Long story short, there were coconut cream cupcakes and vanilla latte cake pops splattered throughout the vehicle but, no one was injured - other than my poor car. She spent a few days at the car doctor and is back on the road now, but it was touch and go there for a moment.
Not to mention.. I spent over an hour trying to fix the tire that was flat only to find out that it wasn't the only flat tire and that I wasn't driving anywhere, anytime soon... all whilst donning a skirt and heels of course. All in a days work for this mom-preneur. I was just glad MY little babycakes weren't in the car to A. get hurt or B. complain about how they were thirsty, had to pee, were hungry, had to pee again, and how they wanted to play x-box the whole time I was trying to change a tire... yea. I'm really glad that wasn't the case.

Hopefully there will be a new, bigger, sugar mobile somewhere down the road... One that will stay ON the road.

Candied Grapefruit from this month's Summer Splash seasonal cupcakes.
You know you want some.

cupcakes for breakfast? yes, please.

HELLLLLLLLOOO! (in my best Mrs. Doubtfire voice) Sorry, just watched it with the kids the other day... You might be muttering how strange I am under your breath right now, or even shaking your head -- but guess what - you're reading the crazy sugar bitch's blog. What's that say about YOU?

Anyhow, I'm back. Finally. As usual, I get sucked into the kitchen and can't come up for air for days and when I finally do have a chance to catch my breath the last thing I want to do is sit at my computer and blab about what's been going on in the world of BABYCAKES. But, here I am.. blabbing away.

So much has been going on, between graduation cakes, graduation cupcakes (all sorts! even a graduation from Dental school - check out the little teeth we put on those cupcakes.. edible teeth! ha!) a Certifikid deal, a scrabillion cake pops, cookies, naked cupcakes (more about those later) and the never-ending kitchen experimentation that fuels our creations.. we've been locked down. Below you can expect what's coming soon, food porn, up-coming SugarWhore treats and some brand new confections.

Let's see, first order of business - a little but of sugar porn. It's necessary... You'll see why.

Yup. BABYCAKES version of the Oreo. It's very similar to the traditional, all American, have been in your lunch box since you were a kid - Oreo. Only way freakin' better. These "cookies" are the best kind.. not crunchy and not TOO chewy, and the filling? Our classic Vanilla Buttercream. Coming soon... Red Velvet sandwich cookies, Strawberry sandwich cookies, Lemon, the list could go on for days. And, I double checked just to be sure -- totally dunkable (in milk, duh).

And, here are the little teeth that we put on top of the cupcakes for the Dental graduation.. chomp. chomp.

Pearly whites sitting on top of Triple Berry! Which is the perfect lead, since July's SugarWhore cupcakes are just that! Triple Berry.

Triple Berry (strawberry, raspberry and blackberry all crammed into pound cake, topped with Marscapone frosting and a "red, white and blue" Strawberry on top to be exact. What's a red, white and blue Strawberry you ask... You will just have to wait and see. Bottom line, adorable. They aren't to be missed, kids. Not a SugarWhore? Join via. the website, and do it before June 27th if you want to get in on the July action.

Moving right along. Let's discuss ice-cream cakes. Haven't worked out all the deets.. but, it's happening and SOON! Quite possibly even w/ BABYCAKES own homemade ice-cream. Just think, peach ice cream, french vanilla cake, and why not throw some fresh peach slices into the middle - cover it with frosting and just freeze it all up. Drooling? Me too. We'll keep you posted.

Oh, oh... naked cupcakes. IE. for breakfast!

Basically, we have decided that it is appropriate to eat cupcakes for breakfast as long as they are naked (sans frosting), and have some sort of fruit in them. Above = Blueberry Coffee Cake and in our eyes - totally acceptable for breakfast. The entire line/list o' flavors of naked breaky cakes coming soon.

Holy Mole, I'm tired of talking about myself. I've got more to blab about, however, there are children and a husband that are going to turn into rabid raccoons if they don't get fed dinner at some point this evening.

More coming soon.. pinky swear.

buzz-buzz

Who doesn't love pretty pictures, a la food porn?

Chocolate Cappuccino

Very-Berry Strawberry

Peaches and Cream

Chocolate Raspberry

Don't worry - that wasn't our upcoming "big news"... That would have been lame if I got everyone hyped up for a few new flavors. Everyone would have been all... "I can't believe she's been talking this up for two days, and she gives us peaches and cream..."
Don't worry..  actual good/exciting/big news coming soon. And, it's not just about sugar!

Expect more cupcake porn when we get back from vacation! Everyone enjoy your Memorial Day weekend!

Monday, May 23, 2011

so, the world didn't come to an end.. we'll keep baking.

I am aware that it has been about 457 years since the last blog update. And, I'm terribly sorry for that. And - if there were more than 10 of you that actually read this thing, it might matter - but... yup.

So, we've been busy here at buttercream factory. The SugarWhore Cupcake of the Month club kicked off last month w/ May's delivery being Margarita Cupcakes! They were crazy-Cinco de Mayo goodness.. Lime cupcakes brushed with Tequila and Grand Marnier, Citrus Frosting and of course a salted/sugared rim. They were adorned w/ a little straw and slice of lime.. just 'cause. The husband (BABYCAKES' dishwasher) was inclined to eat them all, as he loves a good margarita.. but, I kept him at bay and all of my SugarWhore's got their deliveries.
June's delivery is Raspberry Lemonade.. Meyer Lemon cupcakes w/ Raspberry Filling. Lemon Swiss-Meringue Buttercream all topped off w/ homemade Raspberry Sugar. Basically, if you haven't become a SugarWhore yet. You'll need to go ahead and do that now.

We are also working on an extra special project at the moment... A "new" confection. Well, I mean, not NEW -- it has existed for years.. but, we're putting our BABYCAKES spin on it.. and hoping that you all will fall in love with it just the same as we have.. more deets on that coming soon. Pinky swear.

OH! And, don't forget about our Dad's Day boxes... Chocolate Stout Cupcakes w/ Bourbon Buttercream OR Coffee Cupcakes w/ Fresh Whipped Cream and a homemade old fashioned doughnut on top. More info/pricing on the website - www.willhustleforcupcakes.com

So, I obviously haven't done the best job letting everyone know -- but, we make LOTS of other "sugar fixs" besides our Ethereal Cupcakes. We make cookies, tarts, cake pops, and the list goes on...
EVEN more important -- all of these things, cupcakes included are available as Vegan and/or Gluten Free!

Website should be updated at some point today as well...
Looking forward to seeing all my SugarWhore's the first weekend in June!

moving right along..

Goodbye Easter! BABYCAKES hopes that you ate too much sugar and enjoyed some relaxation with your family and friends. And, of course -- that you had great, homemade treats, not the same old, same old that had been laying around the shelves since January!!

Moving right along to Mother's Day.. Ladies and Gents. This is a very, very important holiday. Now.. it has nothing to do with the fact that I am a mother myself and throughly enjoy being spoiled. Nope, it's all about this simple fact. At some point in your life, you probably threw up, pooped on, screamed at, and generally made your Mother's life a tad bit difficult. Don't get me wrong -- more than likely, you have brought her great amounts of joy. HOWEVER, that whole changing your diapers (for years, mind you) and taking great care of you (again, for YEARS) means your Mama deserves something extra spesh! Combine the traditional sweets and flowers by sending her a BABYCAKES Mother's Day Box of Love.

A 1/2 Dozen Cupcakes (flavor/frosting of your choice -- what's Mom's fav??) topped with handmade fondant roses and hearts. Delivered to her door on Mother's Day! ($25)
Orders must be in by May 6th for Mother's Day Delivery.

Hippity Hoppity... Hippity Hoppity..

We are continuing our campaign against Chocolate Bunnies.

Did you know that 9 out of every 10 children would rather have a personalized Easter Basket from BABYCAKES than one of the store bought, pre-packaged, plastic things from the drug store? Well, it's true. At least, in BABYCAKES' circle of kids it is!

This is the deal -- you contact BABYCAKES and say, "I'd like to order two Easter Basket's, please! One for my son Colin and one for our daughter Kiera..." then, you let us know what day is best for delivery. What shows up at your door are two gorgeously packaged Easter Baskets. Your son's basket has a hand decorated tag hanging from the top that says COLIN and the same for your precious little princess, KIERA! Your son's vanilla bean cake pops are bright blue and of course your daughters are pretty pink! The baskets are chock full of sweetness.. hand decorated Easter egg and Baby chick sugar cookies, homemade marshmallow "Peeps" and it's all topped off with a flourless chocolate-rose cupcake. Now, you can't tell me you still want that white chocolate bunny from Cadbury that was made in January...
Don't disappoint your little chicks!

And, at $35/ea. and delivered to your door, you can't get a better hook up!

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

just say NO!

Get out your Faberge eggs and Jellybelly's -- Peter Cottontail is on his way! It's time to grab some sweets and spoil your littlest chicks! But, BABYCAKES would like to ask all of you to just say NO this year!

Just say NO to Chocolate Bunnies!

Yes, you heard me correctly. We are joining forces with PETC (People for the Ethical Treatment of Candy) to stand up to the mass production of those bug eyed, preservative filled, Cadbury bunnies! We want Nestle to know that what they give us year after year are stale, sad little rabbits that don't have nearly enough cocoa, cream, or decedance to satisfy our chocolate cravings! After all, Easter is all about the candy, right?

Show your support by purchasing an Easter Basket from BABYCAKES! Our baskets will be personalized with your child (or adult's) name and delivered right to the door of your choosing! They will be filled with pretty pink cake pops for girls and bright blue cake pops for boys, hand decorated Easter egg/baby Chick sugar cookies (from my partner in crime Cristin Terrill!), homemade marshmallow "peeps" (shown above these fluffy little guys are waiting to be dipped in yellow sugar!) and of course a chocolate-rose cupcake. $35/per basket

Place your order here! Orders should be placed by April 17th if you'd like delivery the day before Easter (Saturday April 23rd). As always, we thank you for your business and supporting us as we stand up against the homogenization of the American palate!
We also appreciate your indulgence in our sarcasim. Cheers!

spring is in the air!

The cake pops were a HUGE hit at Friday night's event for The Reading Connection. I'd say of the two flavors, Mint Chocolate was queen. Our Lemon Meringue cookies went over equally as well, and altho people are immediately skeptical when they hear things like apple/cheddar and chocolate/black lava sea salt -- they are always thrilled when they find out just how well these combinations compliment each other. Carla Hall (from Top Chef, for those that live under a rock) attended the event and read her rendition of Green Eggs and Ham, adorable! PS: she had on gorgeous shoes, which of course, made me love her even more! All in all, I'd say we killed it.

Back at the Bat-Cave, the website has been updated.... new photos, seasonal cupcake flavors and the "other petite confections" page is up and running.
Next up -- our black and white wedding cake and 200ish cupcakes for Saturday's wedding. Looking forward to the photographs of the finished product! It should be a gorgeous display of sugar.

Don't forget, if you order a dozen cupcakes in the month of April, you'll get a free box of "petite confections" with your order!

better than sex chocolate cupcakes!

I thought these turned out kinda cute.. they were for a friend's birthday. Most importantly, they were damn delicious. Better than sex chocolate cupcakes filled with Chocolate Mousse topped off with Chocolate Cream Cheese frosting. Oh, and PS -- a fresh raspberry in the middle of the Chocolate Mousse (surprise!). I told you they were going to be better than sex.
