cupcakes for breakfast? yes, please.

HELLLLLLLLOOO! (in my best Mrs. Doubtfire voice) Sorry, just watched it with the kids the other day... You might be muttering how strange I am under your breath right now, or even shaking your head -- but guess what - you're reading the crazy sugar bitch's blog. What's that say about YOU?

Anyhow, I'm back. Finally. As usual, I get sucked into the kitchen and can't come up for air for days and when I finally do have a chance to catch my breath the last thing I want to do is sit at my computer and blab about what's been going on in the world of BABYCAKES. But, here I am.. blabbing away.

So much has been going on, between graduation cakes, graduation cupcakes (all sorts! even a graduation from Dental school - check out the little teeth we put on those cupcakes.. edible teeth! ha!) a Certifikid deal, a scrabillion cake pops, cookies, naked cupcakes (more about those later) and the never-ending kitchen experimentation that fuels our creations.. we've been locked down. Below you can expect what's coming soon, food porn, up-coming SugarWhore treats and some brand new confections.

Let's see, first order of business - a little but of sugar porn. It's necessary... You'll see why.

Yup. BABYCAKES version of the Oreo. It's very similar to the traditional, all American, have been in your lunch box since you were a kid - Oreo. Only way freakin' better. These "cookies" are the best kind.. not crunchy and not TOO chewy, and the filling? Our classic Vanilla Buttercream. Coming soon... Red Velvet sandwich cookies, Strawberry sandwich cookies, Lemon, the list could go on for days. And, I double checked just to be sure -- totally dunkable (in milk, duh).

And, here are the little teeth that we put on top of the cupcakes for the Dental graduation.. chomp. chomp.

Pearly whites sitting on top of Triple Berry! Which is the perfect lead, since July's SugarWhore cupcakes are just that! Triple Berry.

Triple Berry (strawberry, raspberry and blackberry all crammed into pound cake, topped with Marscapone frosting and a "red, white and blue" Strawberry on top to be exact. What's a red, white and blue Strawberry you ask... You will just have to wait and see. Bottom line, adorable. They aren't to be missed, kids. Not a SugarWhore? Join via. the website, and do it before June 27th if you want to get in on the July action.

Moving right along. Let's discuss ice-cream cakes. Haven't worked out all the deets.. but, it's happening and SOON! Quite possibly even w/ BABYCAKES own homemade ice-cream. Just think, peach ice cream, french vanilla cake, and why not throw some fresh peach slices into the middle - cover it with frosting and just freeze it all up. Drooling? Me too. We'll keep you posted.

Oh, oh... naked cupcakes. IE. for breakfast!

Basically, we have decided that it is appropriate to eat cupcakes for breakfast as long as they are naked (sans frosting), and have some sort of fruit in them. Above = Blueberry Coffee Cake and in our eyes - totally acceptable for breakfast. The entire line/list o' flavors of naked breaky cakes coming soon.

Holy Mole, I'm tired of talking about myself. I've got more to blab about, however, there are children and a husband that are going to turn into rabid raccoons if they don't get fed dinner at some point this evening.

More coming soon.. pinky swear.

Who doesn't love pretty pictures, a la food porn?

Chocolate Cappuccino

Very-Berry Strawberry

Peaches and Cream

Chocolate Raspberry

Don't worry - that wasn't our upcoming "big news"... That would have been lame if I got everyone hyped up for a few new flavors. Everyone would have been all... "I can't believe she's been talking this up for two days, and she gives us peaches and cream..."
Don't worry..  actual good/exciting/big news coming soon. And, it's not just about sugar!

Expect more cupcake porn when we get back from vacation! Everyone enjoy your Memorial Day weekend!

moving right along..

Goodbye Easter! BABYCAKES hopes that you ate too much sugar and enjoyed some relaxation with your family and friends. And, of course -- that you had great, homemade treats, not the same old, same old that had been laying around the shelves since January!!

Moving right along to Mother's Day.. Ladies and Gents. This is a very, very important holiday. Now.. it has nothing to do with the fact that I am a mother myself and throughly enjoy being spoiled. Nope, it's all about this simple fact. At some point in your life, you probably threw up, pooped on, screamed at, and generally made your Mother's life a tad bit difficult. Don't get me wrong -- more than likely, you have brought her great amounts of joy. HOWEVER, that whole changing your diapers (for years, mind you) and taking great care of you (again, for YEARS) means your Mama deserves something extra spesh! Combine the traditional sweets and flowers by sending her a BABYCAKES Mother's Day Box of Love.

A 1/2 Dozen Cupcakes (flavor/frosting of your choice -- what's Mom's fav??) topped with handmade fondant roses and hearts. Delivered to her door on Mother's Day! ($25)
Orders must be in by May 6th for Mother's Day Delivery.

better than sex chocolate cupcakes!

I thought these turned out kinda cute.. they were for a friend's birthday. Most importantly, they were damn delicious. Better than sex chocolate cupcakes filled with Chocolate Mousse topped off with Chocolate Cream Cheese frosting. Oh, and PS -- a fresh raspberry in the middle of the Chocolate Mousse (surprise!). I told you they were going to be better than sex.

as if we needed more reason to celebrate...

HAPPY NATIONAL CARROT CAKE DAY!

It's true. Carrot cake happens to be one of my most favorite BABYCAKES flavors. I'm not sure if it's the most perfect cream cheese frosting (I know I'm biased, but I strongly believe that our cream cheese frosting = to die for) that usually tops these quasi-healthful cupcakes or if it's simply because I can lie to myself and say, you know... these aren't terrible for you; there are carrots in them, after all! I'll have two....

Either way -- the next time you have an excuse to order some BABYCAKES, you should defiantly try our Carrot Cake. You'll be surprised. Not all carrot cakes are the same, and certainly -- not all carrot cakes are BABYCAKES!

to the boyfriends, husbands, sons, etc... PAY ATTENTION!

The Old Town Crier should hit the streets tomorrow! Make sure you grab a copy, read the BABYCAKES article (February edition, Business profile), and then -- order your Valentine's Day cupcakes (babycakesSKJ@gmail.com -- is where you order, in case you are new to the site)!

I've extended the time in which I will be taking orders for Valentine's Day (you can order up until the 12th to get a delivery on the 14th). I'm not going to lie, I did this because it was brought to my attention that most men wait until the very last minute to get their wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, fiances, significant others, moms, sisters, friends, ad nauseum a gift. So -- there you go boys. You've got plenty of time to get that order for a half dozen Chocolate Raspberry Stout cupcakes topped with Ganache Buttercream and Chocolate dipped Strawberries in for your sweetie.

PS. You are going to be able to order the "Valentine's flavors" for all of February! I personally, am obsessed with them, and want to give everyone the opportunity to taste these heavenly treats.

June Cleaver, much?

Really, I must get some better photos taken of me "at work". Perhaps where I don't look like the 1950's icon, Mrs. Cleaver. Although -- it could be a good bit?

Monday, January 24, 2011

I heart you.

It's that time of year again.. my most favorite of the holidays, that I like to refer to as "The Shannon Extravaganza!" You see I was born on February 14th (that's Valentine's Day for all you men out there), and my husband and I said our "I Do's" on February 16th... therefore, the second week and/or the third week of February is usually dedicated to celebrating. I've actually been lobbying Congress to see if they could get a bill passed to make "The Shannon Extravaganza" an official holiday week. Per usual, they are slow accomplishing anything worth accomplishing.

This year, I'm even more hyped then in years past because BABYCAKES will be debuting their Valentine's Day treats. Basically, I will spend the second week of February feeding YOUR faces w/ over the top decadence, and I will in turn spend the third week feeding MY face with over the top decadence. Deal?

BABYCAKES will be offering two flavors of Chocolate Cupcakes (for all you chocolate haters out there, I'm sorry about your luck. Talk to me around St. Patrick's Day -- I'm thinking Green Velvet?).

So, Heart Day Treats will be as follows -- Chocolate Raspberry Stout cupcakes w/ a Chocolate Ganache buttercream *OR* Espresso Valrhona cupcakes w/ a Fudge frosting. To top off these sweeties, you can choose from hand dipped (chocolate or white chocolate) strawberries, or cherries OR hand-made fondant sweetheart roses (example below).

Stay tuned for an e-mail coming soon w/ the details! And, if you aren't on the mailing list... SHAME on you, get in touch with me at babycakesSKJ@gmail.com STAT to get your e-mail added to the list. You wouldn't want to miss out on something fabulous, would you?

I bake naked.

For those of you that have e-mailed me, asking me WTF "I bake naked" means... it is NOT in the literal sense, although -- it's eye catching right? That's kinda the point.
It means, I bake w/out preservatives, or any of that other crap. There is no margarine or liquid egg whites in BABYCAKES. It's all farm fresh eggs, and real-deal butta!

I just had to share these. I'm a little bit obsessed with the way they turned out. The best part -- I am delivering them to someone that has no idea they are coming (SURPRISE from her Fiance!) How stinkin' cute is that? All you boys out there.. take a hint! I cannot wait to see her face.

And, in recent news.. as you know, the week of Dec. 11th -- 18th is booked solid for BABYCAKES. If you'd like to get an order in for the following week, you should probably light a fire under your hiney, or you just might miss out on your Christmas Holiday box. (per usual, I will be delivering the 23rd and 24th).

Hope every one's Holiday season is going smoothly and of course, cheerfully.

just yappin'...

Warning: This post might be totally and completely unrelated to cupcakes, but will be however, filled to the gills with talk about food, vacationing, ad nauseum. I'll throw in a picture of some of my cupcakes, here for good measure.

Happy now?
So, on to the yappin'... I recently acquired a vacation. Yes, I do mean to say acquired, as I  sort of threw myself upon someone else's trip -- which, wasn't really at all a vacation (other then the fact that it wasn't home... it was somewhere way better.. San Francisco, and The Napa Valley, but it was going to be mostly work). So, she is headed west, all business... and I decided to fly out for a long weekend, so that we could play a little and of course work a little, because -- honestly, when it comes to the two of us.. we are never NOT talking about work. And, now -- we have literally come up with 763 things to do in three days. Most of which involve eating. You can't possibly be shocked.

While we visit Napa I believe that our journey is going to begin at Domaine Carneros followed with a visit to Yountville for lunch at Thomas Keller's Bouchon Bistro (I was devastated to learn that The French Laundry would be closed while I was there. Heartbroken.) After lunch, I believe it's off to Frog's Leap and/or Chateau Montelena  followed by (perhaps) a stop at Auberge and then dinner is most likely going to be in Sonoma at ZAZU (Vegetarian's be warned). Pretty much, heavenly. I am beside myself with excitement.

I'm not even sure what's going to happen the other two days that I'm there... could be more Napa stuff, must see at least parts of San Fran., and just general fabulosity. I know we discussed dinner at Delfina's -- which I'd love as they are James Beard award winners (obvi. another one of my 754 obsessions). *Sigh* I cannot flippin' wait.

I suppose that I should take this moment to thank the hubs for being the absolute BEST man, EVER. He spoils me. He ships me off on vacay's to California w/out he or the kids, and simply says -- he's happy to do it. I'm a verra lucky girl. I'm sure that The Winter Classic tickets/jersey helped support his decision, but hell... we BOTH deserve to be spoiled a little every now and again...

I SURVIVED THANKSGIVING!

It's true. I survived Thanksgiving. I survived 37 dozen cupcakes, in basically three days... and I'm not going to lie.. it was no easy feat. There were times when I thought that I was getting sick (pretty much everyone else in the house was so, I assumed I was next.. and the exhaustion didn't help) -- where I could be seen shotgunning orange juice and any other source of Vitamin C that was left lying around the kitchen. I drank approx. 657 cups of coffee. My husband and children were basically left to starve. And, I was talking about pumpkin and other such things in my sleep. I had other orders on either side of the Thanksgiving mania (both the weekend before and the weekend after) so, I've been busy for 7+ days straight, baking. Hence, the lack of blogging. I adored knocking on doors -- "HI! BABYCAKES ARE HERE!" I felt like an old fashioned delivery girl!
Honestly. The last 24 hours have been spent relaxing, eating, cleaning, napping, eating, and napping some more. I needed it. Enjoyed every second of it... but, now. It's back to work. Time for Christmas flavors, more holiday boxes, Christmas packaging, etc.

I am pretty sure that I will go into the Christmas season a little bit more prepared. I'm allowing myself two days for delivery and pick ups this time around. I am pretty sure that Christmas will be just as busy, if not more so then Thanksgiving, and I'll need the extra day. Therefore, delivery/pick-up for Christmas orders will be the 23rd and 24th (FYI).

I've gotten bright RED boxes for the Christmas season, and am still searching for the perfect ribbon... something that I can make a spectacular bow with. I love the idea of these Holiday Boxes looking like a present. And, everything is going to be finished off with a label that claims -- Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice! Happy Holidays, BABYCAKES!

I've also changed things up a bit when it comes to the Holiday flavors, in honor of Christmas. I've decided on; Winter White -- Vanilla/Vanilla topped with White Sparkling Sugar, Red Velvet with Cream Cheese Frosting, Eggnog with Spiced Latte Frosting, and Candy Cane -- Chocolate with Red and White striped Peppermint Frosting.

almost out of time!

If you are thinking about ordering a BABYCAKES Holiday Box, I'd suggest doing it today. I'm only taking 5ish (depending on the size of the order) more orders for Thanksgiving -- Christmas is still wide open (FYI). I want to make sure that every one's cupcakes are perfect... And, we are looking at 20-30 dozen at this point throughout that week, and although I am thrilled about the business, and of course the money, I am also obsessed with everything going smoothly and the cupcakes being perfect.

Not only do I have Thanksgiving coming up, but there are orders on either side of the Holiday as well. Soooo -- I'll be a busy little girl over the next 10 days or so. You know what? Altho, exhausted. I'm stoked. I had no idea I would be this busy three weeks after I started this little business. And, what's exhaustion? Nothing a little (or a lot) of coffee can't fix.

pretty pictures

BABYCAKES Photography by Shannon Wang

don't forget!

Tomorrow night BABYCAKES will be at La Plata TV and Appliance (with SAMPLES) helping the store kick off their line of KitchenAid small appliances. Come by, grab a mini-BABYCAKE and place an order for Thanksgiving before it's too late (we are down to the wire!) and don't forget to grab a KitchenAid stand mixer for the pastry chef in your life (or accessories for a certain someone that already has a KitchenAid...)

Tuesday November, 16th -- 4-7pm at LaPlata TV and Appliance, 5895 Crain Hwy. LaPlata, MD
